Akureyri is located in northern Iceland and is the country’s second-largest urban area after the Greater Reykjavík region, often referred to as the “Capital of the North.” It is Iceland’s fourth-largest city and an important port and fishing hub.

Akureyri is a key cultural, educational, and leisure destination in northern Iceland. From September to April, it is an ideal place to witness one of the Earth’s most spectacular natural phenomena—the Northern Lights. The city was named one of the top ten European travel destinations in 2013 by Lonely Planet. The Akureyri Church, built in 1940 with the character of a Lutheran cathedral, is the city’s most iconic building. Additionally, the mountains southwest of the city offer excellent opportunities for hiking and mountaineering.
