Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg

The Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg is located in northwestern Austria. The Old Town was established in 798 AD, and Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched on a hill, was built in 1077 and serves as the city’s iconic landmark. The St. Peter's Abbey Cathedral, constructed in the late 17th century, is the first building in the Italian architectural style. The musical genius and intellect of Salzburg composer Mozart also brought great prestige to the city.

The urban layout of the episcopal district differs from other parts of the city. The former occupies a large area on the left bank of the river, preserving regularly spaced grand squares, while the latter has only three market squares within its crowded neighborhoods. All areas are dotted with fountains, gardens, statues, and reliefs, and several bridges connect the two sides of the river. Hohensalzburg Fortress, standing at a height of 120 meters, still overlooks the entire city of Salzburg.

Spires, domes, and bell towers stand out prominently in the city’s architectural landscape. Through continuous beautification and refinement, the entire city has become a harmonious blend of various architectural styles: Romanesque, Gothic, and Italian Renaissance.
