Salzburg

Salzburg is located in western Austria and serves as the capital of the state of Salzburg. It is the gateway to the Alps and the fourth-largest city in Austria after Vienna, Graz, and Linz. The city is an important hub for tourism, culture, universities, sports, and conventions in Austria, boasting numerous tourist destinations that you absolutely must not miss.

Salzburg has a remarkably long history and is the oldest city within the current territory of Austria. Its Old Town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city’s Baroque architectural style holds unique charm, with key examples including Salzburg Cathedral and Mirabell Garden. The city is home to many castles and palaces. Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched on a hill within the city, is Salzburg’s landmark. Spanning 250 meters in length and up to 150 meters in width, it is the largest fortress still standing in Central Europe. The Mirabell Palace in the city center, as well as Hellbrunn Palace and its palace gardens and fountains, also attract thousands of visitors. Salzburg Cathedral, rebuilt between 1614 and 1628, is the first Baroque church north of the Alps. The Benedictine Nonnberg Nunnery is the oldest continuously operating nunnery in the world. In winter, Salzburg becomes a skiing destination. Although there are no ski resorts within the city itself, as the gateway to the Alps, it welcomes countless skiers flying in from all over Europe every year.

Salzburg is the birthplace of musical genius Mozart. He spent more than half of his short life—less than 36 years—in Salzburg. It is also the hometown of conductor Herbert von Karajan and the filming location of the Hollywood movie *The Sound of Music*.
