Etal Castle

Etal Castle is the ruins of a medieval English castle located in the village of Etal in Northumberland, England. It is one of the UK's Grade I listed historic buildings and is now managed by Historic England.

The castle was originally built by the Manners family in the late 12th century. In 1341, Robert de Manners, a nobleman and physician, began expanding the castle into a defensive structure to resist Scottish invasions, resulting in the form of the castle we see today. The descendants of the Manners family lived here until the castle was abandoned in the 15th century. It is said that in 1542, the castle suffered significant damage due to warfare.

Today, the remains of Etal Castle mainly consist of the gatehouse and curtain walls. A permanent exhibition is housed in the surviving small chapel, showcasing historical materials related to border wars and the Battle of Flodden, as well as armor and weaponry. The exhibition is highly praised by visitors and is worth seeing. The surrounding area of the ruined castle is covered with greenery, flowers, and trees, making it a great spot for family outings, gatherings with friends, or picnics.
