Aidon Castle

Aidon Castle is a fortified manor located in Aidon, Northumberland, England, and is one of the best-preserved medieval buildings in the country. It is a listed historic building and has been designated as a Grade I listed structure by Historic England.

Aidon Castle was established by Robert de Reymes, a Suffolk-based merchant, and was originally constructed in 1296. The castle enjoys a unique geographical advantage, situated on a high ridge that provided it with natural defensive barriers. However, in 1315, it could not escape being sacked by the Scots during their raids in the Aidon area. Over the following centuries, the castle changed hands several times.

Aidon Castle consists of an outer bailey, middle bailey, and inner bailey, with the main structures located within the middle bailey. There is also an orchard on the site. The two-story great hall and walled kitchen form the inner bailey, while the remaining western section comprises the middle bailey. The second floor of the castle originally housed a bathroom, banquet hall, and kitchen; the middle bailey, used for entertaining guests, was destroyed in 1540; the entrance to the outer bailey is a simple archway.

In the 18th century, Aidon Castle was converted into a farmhouse and remained so until 1960. Today, the castle is open to the public, and its quaint charm makes it a great spot for family gatherings and picnics. It also serves as an ideal starting point for forest walks.
