Chipchase Castle

Chipchase Castle is a 17th-century Jacobean manor house, accompanied by a sturdy 14th-century pele tower, located in Northumberland, England, just north of Hadrian’s Wall. The castle has been registered as a historic building in the UK and is a Grade I listed structure.

The original owners of Chipchase Castle were the Herons, a family whose member Walter Heron acquired the castle by marrying the heiress of Chipchase. In the mid-14th century, Walter Heron added a massive four-storey battlemented tower to the existing castle. In 1621, Cuthbert Heron, who served as High Sheriff of Northumberland, demolished the original castle buildings and constructed an entirely new Jacobean manor house, retaining only the original tower. Over time, the castle changed hands twice, and parts of its interior were altered, but the overall layout still retains its Jacobean style.

Today, Chipchase Castle is privately owned. The surrounding woodlands and gardens are open to the public year-round, but the interior of the castle is only open to visitors during June each year. Guests can enjoy a range of activities on the castle grounds and its surroundings, such as shooting, fishing, holding weddings, filming, and photography. On sunny days, visitors may also spot herds of cattle and sheep grazing peacefully on the lawns in front of the castle—an especially charming sight.
