Introduction Some say that King Alfred founded this college as early as around 800 AD. But the general view is that it was established in 1249, making it still the oldest. The college courtyard is not large, nor does it have any notable sights for visitors. But there are many anecdotes about notable figures—such as Robert being the first in the world to observe living cells, and the poet Percy Shelley publishing an atheist paper during his time at the college which led to his expulsion. The college buildings were rebuilt in the 17th century. Ticket / Opening Hours Opening hours: 10:00–18:00 (only open in July).
