The White Cliffs of Dover are located at Beachy Head on the English Channel in the United Kingdom, stretching over 5 kilometers of white cliffs. The highest point of the cliffs reaches 110 meters and is composed of fine-grained limestone. The White Cliffs of Dover are now considered a symbol of England, and when viewed from mainland Europe, these beautiful white cliffs are the most prominent landmark of Britain.

The cliffs were actually formed by the slow deposition of tiny marine microorganisms at a rate of 0.015 millimeters per year, dating back to the Cretaceous period over 130 million years ago. Cretaceous strata often contain chalk components. Chalk layers are an extremely fine and pure powdery limestone, formed through biological marine sedimentation, primarily composed of calcium-rich microfossils called coccoliths and fossils of planktonic foraminifera. Chalk deposits can be found in many parts of northwestern Europe, including the White Cliffs of Dover, the Normandy coast of France, as well as the Low Countries, northern Germany, and the coasts of Denmark, among which the White Cliffs of Dover are the most famous. Chalk is not a very solid material, so these sedimentary layers are loose in texture and also contain limestone and sandy rock. Fossils such as sea urchins, belemnites, ammonites, and marine reptiles (such as mosasaurs) can be found in these strata.
