Rochester Castle

Rochester Castle is located in Rochester, Kent, England, on the eastern bank of the River Medway. It is one of the best-preserved medieval castle ruins in the UK. Although built in 1127 with remnants of Norman architecture still visible, a fortress has existed here since Roman times (around 43 AD). The castle now belongs to English Heritage and is open to the public.

In the 13th century, Rochester Castle was attacked by King John, resulting in extensive damage and even partial collapse at the southern corner. The damaged parts were later repaired and rebuilt into cylindrical structures. In 1264, the castle was again under attack during a battle, but restoration work did not occur until 100 years later. During that time, due to natural erosion, the castle had nearly become a ruin. Repairs and renovations were carried out during the reign of Edward III, and after the second round of restoration, the castle became what is known as a fully functional fortress. In the 17th century, the castle was once again neglected and fell into obscurity. Later, it suffered a severe fire, and locals even dismantled parts of the stonework to build their own homes.

In 1840, the city of Rochester leased the castle, and eventually the surrounding area was turned into a park. Since the Victorian era, Rochester Castle Gardens have been an important recreational spot in Rochester, featuring a seaside promenade, a bandstand, and becoming a hub for festivals and summer concerts.
