Bergen, the second-largest city in Norway, is built on hills and surrounded by mountains and fjords. With the city nestled between mountains and facing the sea, it exudes an overall sense of symmetry and order. Seven major mountains are scattered around the urban area, earning the city the nickname "City of the Seven Mountains." Among them, Mount Ulriken, with an elevation of 643 meters, is the highest of Bergen's "Seven Mountains."

It takes about 10 minutes by cable car to reach the summit of Mount Ulriken, which offers the best panoramic views of the Bergen fjords and surrounding islands. The mountaintop features a TV tower, a restaurant, a café, and several free telescopes from which you can admire the entire city of Bergen below. Free small-scale concerts themed around Grieg are also occasionally held nearby. A scenic tour of Bergen on the double-decker bus route “Bergen Highlights,” which includes the cable car ride, costs only 130 kroner. Locals often come here with their families for hikes and picnics. Known as “one of the most scenic areas in all of Norway,” even the locals never tire of the views and make time to revisit the site.
