Hanseatic Museum

The Hanseatic Museum (Hanseatic Museum) is located at the front of the row houses in Bryggen, with a flag flying from its roof. Established in 1702, it is the oldest building in the city and was originally a warehouse for merchants in the 16th century. The exhibits inside are highly intriguing. The background of Bergen’s participation in the Hanseatic League lies in the 14th to 16th centuries, driven by European demand for cod. At that time, Bergen was a hub port for the North Sea cod industry, attracting numerous German merchants from league cities who purchased large quantities of cod here. The fish were dried and then shipped to various regions for sale. This museum building served as the residence, warehouse, and office for the German merchants.
