Fløibanen Funicular

The Fløibanen Funicular is located in Bergen, Hordaland County, Norway. It takes passengers up Mount Fløyen (Fløyen), offering panoramic views of the city of Bergen. As the city’s premier and most popular tourist attraction, it attracts approximately one million visitors each year.

The Fløibanen Funicular officially opened on January 15, 1919. The idea to build a funicular up Mount Fløyen was first proposed in 1895 by John Lund, an employee of the Norwegian legislature. Construction began in 1914, and the cable car line was completed in 1918. Today, the funicular is 44% owned by the Bergen Municipality, with the remaining shares held privately. A portion of the annual profits is allocated to the development of a new generation of cable cars, with completion expected around 2030. The cars and machinery were last fully upgraded between September and November 2002.

There are two cars in operation, each capable of carrying around 80 passengers, and the service runs year-round. The line is 850 meters long with a height difference of 300 meters. The Fløibanen is a narrow-gauge railway with a track gauge of 1000 mm. Each car has its own name and is painted a different color—Blåmann is blue, and Rødhette is red. The names were chosen through a naming competition. The ride takes about seven minutes with stops at all stations, including three minutes and twenty seconds of continuous travel. Depending on traffic load, the cars travel at speeds of 4–6 meters per second.
