Bergen Aquarium

Bergen Aquarium is one of Norway’s larger public aquariums, located on the Nordnes peninsula in Bergen. It is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Officially opened on August 27, 1960, it was once the largest and most modern aquarium in Northern Europe. The aquarium features a comprehensive collection of deep-sea fish and Arctic marine species, with over 60 large tanks housing fish and marine invertebrates. There are also three outdoor ponds displaying seals, penguins, and cyprinid fish, as well as tropical reptiles and monkeys.

Thanks to its unique geographical advantage, Bergen Aquarium boasts plant and animal species that are rare in other aquariums around the world. Strolling through the aquarium feels like swimming freely as a fish in the sea. The aquarium is home to many rare fish, including a white sturgeon named “Nikita,” which was a gift from a fisherman named Nikita in 1964. Today, its former owner has long since passed away, but “Nikita” still enjoys its retirement in the tranquil aquarium, making it the longest-living fish in the facility. There is also an eel named “Moses,” which has produced countless offspring over the past 25 years—many of whom have been sent across the oceans to live in aquariums around the world. The aquarium also has a 225-degree curved screen that continuously plays videos about Bergen and the underwater world.
