Grieg’s Home

Edvard Hagerup Grieg (Norwegian: Edvard Hagerup Grieg, June 15, 1843 – September 4, 1907), a Norwegian composer, was born in Bergen. His ancestors were Scottish. He had democratic and patriotic inclinations. Most of his works were themed around folk life, Nordic legends, literary works, or natural scenery, characterized by a distinct national style. He was a key figure in the Norwegian national music movement. His masterpieces include the Piano Concerto in A Minor, Peer Gynt Suites, Holberg Suite, and Lyric Pieces for Piano. He was an important composer of the Romantic music era, best known for the strong national character of his compositions.

Grieg’s Home is located in Troldhaugen, dozens of kilometers from downtown Bergen. This traditional Nordic two-story wooden house, mainly white with light green accents on doors, windows, and eaves, is simple yet bright. Everything here remains as it was during Grieg’s lifetime. Even the photo frames of Grieg’s beloved mother and wife, placed on the piano, are positioned exactly as they were originally. The piano that created and played some of the world’s most beautiful music still shines brightly, as if untouched by time. Grieg passed away at the age of 63 and returned fully to nature. He and his wife are buried in a steep cliffside on the hill in front of the house, facing the sea and the setting sun. Norwegians hold memorial events here every year on the anniversary of Grieg’s death, each presided over by the King.
