The Bergen Fish Market has been in operation since the 1970s to this day, situated right across from the medieval harbor, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Still standing there is Bryggen, the oldest and most famous building in Bergen. Surrounding it are some old houses that were once the homes of famous artists such as playwright Ludvig Holberg and composer Edvard Grieg.

The fish market is set up on an open area about a hundred meters away from the docks, built along the bay, and it’s always bustling no matter the time. Starting at 5 a.m. every day, rows of stalls begin to line the docks. Due to the large scale of the fish market, it has become a social hub for locals and a must-visit attraction for tourists.

Although seafood at local supermarkets can sometimes be much cheaper, people still enjoy gathering at the fish market to chat. Visiting the fish market has become an important part of life for many, and the city government even mandates that fish market vendors must stay open 280 to 300 days a year. Shopping here is very reassuring — you can either buy seafood to take home or have it prepared on the spot and enjoy delicacies such as salt-boiled shrimp and smoked salmon sandwiches. There are also plenty of tourist shops around the market where visitors can purchase dolls and traditional clothing.
