Basel Zoo

Basel Zoo was established in 1874 and is affectionately called "Zolli" by locals. It is Switzerland's first zoo and one of the most attractive zoos in Europe. Originally founded to exhibit wild animals, Basel Zoo now houses a large number of both native and exotic species.

The current Basel Zoo covers an area of 13 hectares (32 acres), featuring indoor and outdoor exhibits as well as several themed areas, such as a botanical garden, gorilla enclosure, birdhouse, and a dedicated section for animals living on the African savannah. Nearly 600 species and 6,000 animals live here, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. Visitors can enjoy captivating performances by trained elephants and sea lions, but what truly makes Basel Zoo famous are its gorillas and rhinos, along with its successful management of captive animals. The environment here is highly suitable for the animals, who are housed according to their natural behaviors and receive loving care.

In Switzerland, Basel Zoo is the second most visited attraction after the Rhine Falls. Currently, Basel Zoo collaborates with local universities to research scientific animal care and management, and also offers educational programs for students.
