Fondation Beyeler

The Fondation Beyeler is located in Riehen, a suburb of Basel, Switzerland. It houses and manages the art collection of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler, amassed over more than fifty years, featuring nearly 200 renowned works from Impressionist masters such as Van Gogh and Cézanne to modern art. The collection at the Fondation Beyeler is one of the most famous private collections in the world, including top-tier works from the Classical Modern period.

The Fondation Beyeler's collection includes late Post-Impressionist works by Paul Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Claude Monet; Cubist pieces by Picasso and Georges Braque; and creations by individualistic artists such as Miró, Piet Mondrian, Vasily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, and Paul Klee. Among the American Expressionists represented are Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. The collection also features contemporary artists up to Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, and Luciano Fabro. In addition, there is a significant array of sculptures from Africa, Alaska, and Oceania.

Designed by Renzo Piano and opened in October 1997, the museum building itself achieves perfect harmony with the artworks. Particularly in the display spaces for Monet and Giacometti, the outdoor pond and incoming sunlight create an exquisitely beautiful spatial experience. The Fondation Beyeler is open year-round. In addition to special exhibitions of renowned pieces, it hosts three major modern art exhibitions per year, along with collaborative projects with contemporary artists. During exhibition installations, a few of the 22 galleries may be temporarily closed, or a room may be reserved for artist meetings or discussions. Some items from the permanent collection may also be loaned to important exhibitions elsewhere.
