Basel is Switzerland’s third-largest city and also a well-known destination for its museums, earning the title “cultural capital of Switzerland.” In this historic city, over 30 museums offer visitors a wealth of exploration, among which the most renowned is the Basel Historical Museum.

Founded in 1894, the Basel Historical Museum is one of the largest historical museums in Switzerland and part of the country’s national heritage, highly praised by visitors. The museum is divided into four sections (buildings), three of which are located within Basel: the Barefoot Church, the Museum of the Basel Paper Mill (also known as the Museum in the Park), and the Music Museum, while the Coach and Carriage Museum is situated in Münchenstein, southeast of Basel. The main section is housed in the Barefoot Church in central Basel and houses the most comprehensive collection of cultural history in the Upper Rhine region, spanning an exhibition area of 6,200 square meters. Its focus is on the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque periods. Highlights of the Barefoot Church include the treasures of the cathedral, Basel and Strasbourg tapestries, fragments of the Basel Dance of Death, altar and church paintings, items related to Erasmus, coins, and glass paintings.

The Museum of the Basel Paper Mill, built between 1777 and 1780, features around 50 exhibition rooms that predominantly showcase typical living spaces from 18th and 19th century Basel, including various furnishings, paintings, porcelain, and toys. The Music Museum is located on Barfüsserplatz, opposite the Barefoot Church, and its 21 exhibition rooms present centuries of European music history. The Coach and Carriage Museum, established in 1981, is located in Münchenstein, southeast of Basel, and exhibits carriages and sleighs from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
