Rath Museum

The Rath Museum is located on Place Neuve in Geneva, Switzerland, near the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Constructed between 1824 and 1826, it was named after General Simon Rath, the principal sponsor of the museum’s construction project, making it the oldest art museum in Switzerland.

Designed by architect Samuel Vaucher, the Rath Museum is in the neoclassical style and is now listed as an important cultural property of national significance in Switzerland. Initially, the museum focused on permanent and temporary exhibitions, but by the late 19th century, the continuous growth of its collection led to serious space constraints. In 1910, the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Genève was completed, after which the Rath Museum was primarily used for short-term exhibitions. This historic museum is now mainly dedicated to temporary exhibitions showcasing Swiss and international art, as well as archaeological discoveries. Each exhibition attracts art enthusiasts and archaeologists from around the world.
