The Rhaetian Railway is located in the southeastern Swiss canton of Graubünden and the northern Italian province of Sondrio. The Albula Line opened in 1904, stretches 67 kilometers, and lies in the northwest part of the Albula-Bernina Cultural Landscape. Its structure is highly unique and impressive, featuring 42 tunnels and covered galleries as well as 144 viaducts and bridges. The railway traverses the Alps between Switzerland and Italy, winding through pristine natural beauty—rolling snow-capped mountains, deep blue lakes, and quintessentially European countryside scenery.

The Rhaetian Railway in the Albula-Bernina Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. This heritage site represents an outstanding combination of technical excellence, remarkable architecture, and stunning environment. It showcases brilliant achievements in architecture and civil engineering, blending harmoniously with its surroundings and is recognized as one of the most spectacular railway routes in the world. To this day, the Rhaetian Railway remains the highest-altitude railway line crossing the European Alps, with a gradient reaching 70%, making it one of the steepest of its kind in the world.
