San Bernardino Pass
The San Bernardino Pass is a high mountain road that crosses the Swiss Alps, connecting the southern Swiss town of Misox with Hinterrhein. It is one of the steepest roads in the world. The pass sits at an altitude of 2,065 meters, with an exceptionally flat road surface, as well as numerous challenging hairpin bends and some stunning scenery.
The San Bernardino Pass passes through an impressive 6.6-kilometer-long tunnel, a single-bore, two-lane tunnel completed in 1964. The Swiss postal service once issued a commemorative stamp for the tunnel, featuring an equilateral triangular traffic warning sign with a white background and red border as the central design. In the stamp, the warning sign stands in a mountain valley, and the dark blue pattern inside represents a cross-section of the tunnel. Because the San Bernardino Pass Tunnel is located along a rugged and winding mountain road (the thin zigzag lines behind the warning sign on the stamp symbolize the sharp and frequent turns ahead), particular attention should be paid to driving safety.
