Tarasp Castle

Perched on the Tarasp Heights near the outskirts of Scuol, the ancient Tarasp Castle was built in the 11th century by the Tarasp family, who once ruled the region. Since then, the castle has changed hands several times, belonging to the Bishop of Chur, the Prince of Tyrol, and the Habsburg royal family. In the 19th century, a German industrialist invested heavily in extensive restoration work and began opening the castle to the public.

The gate of Tarasp Castle features a double-headed eagle emblem, though it is unclear whether it belonged to the Tarasp family who built the castle in the 11th century or the later Habsburg rulers. The rough-hewn stone walls with their straight, clean lines convey an impression of impregnable strength; the refined interior decorations reflect the castle’s former grandeur. Visitors who climb to the top can enjoy commanding views over the surrounding landscape and experience a sense of ruling from on high — stretching out as far as the eye can see are snow-capped mountains, grasslands, small lakes, churches, and forests — a breathtaking scene from the depths of the Alps.

Visitors can join guided group tours of the interior from June to October. Opening hours: June 1 – July 10, open at 2:30 PM; July 11 – August 20, open at 11:00 AM, 2:30 PM, 3:30 PM, and 4:30 PM; August 21 – October 15, open from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM; during the winter season from Christmas to Easter, open every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 PM.
