If you want to enjoy the glacier’s grandeur with ease, we recommend visiting the Diavolezza observation platform. After stepping off the cable car, you’ll be awestruck by the vast expanse of silver-white landscape before you. In the Morteratsch Valley, you can take a stroll while learning about the history of the glacier. The glacier once extended all the way to near the current station, and now you can observe the remnants left as the glacier has melted and retreated year after year—this is the Morteratsch Valley.

In addition, based on the age markers along the trail, you can learn how much the glacier has retreated each year. The gradually receding traces of the glacier over time tell the story of Earth's history spanning tens of thousands of years. A roughly two-hour hike along the path beside the valley will take you to the small mountain village of Pürgg. This stretch is a bit challenging, but you’ll be rewarded with a one-of-a-kind view of the glacier. Moreover, since the Bernina Express train passes right alongside the glacier, you might also catch a fleeting glimpse of its captivating beauty out the train window—it is the glacier that represents the Bernina Alps.
