Beverin Nature Park

Mount Beverin (elevation 2,998 m), located at the center of Beverin Nature Park, is the park’s focal point of beauty. Majestic, serene, rustic, steadfast, and peaceful—these are descriptors of the habitat of the capricorn (the Romansh name for the wild ibex). The park stretches from Thusis to Schams and encompasses most of the Safien Valley.

Covering an area of 370 square kilometers, the Beverin Nature Park valley is home to many communities with diverse histories, cultures, and languages. There are a total of 12 communities across the park, with about 2,500 residents. Visitors from Thusis can enter the park via the Via Mala gorge, where this “-road” features many awe-inspiring ancient bridges. The Church of St. Martin in Zillis, known as the “Alpine church,” houses well-preserved 12th-century ceiling frescoes—the only complete set of its kind still intact in the world. Continuing along the San Bernardino passenger route leads to the Rofla Gorge, and further to Splügen, Hinterrheintal, or the Upper Rhine Valley, marking the southern end of the nature park. Experienced hikers will be familiar with this trail as it is part of the Via Spluga.

The rich cultural diversity of Beverin Nature Park is also reflected in its well-preserved townscapes, typical scattered settlements, beautifully maintained cultural landscapes, as well as the heritage of the Walser people and the Romansh Rhaeto-Romance dialect.
