Val Müra

Val Müra is a gorge along the Hinterrhein River between Zillis-Reischen and Thusis in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It is a steep yet stunningly scenic valley. Nestled between the Splügen and San Bernardino mountain passes, from a distance it appears as nothing more than a narrow slit.

Val Müra is the largest and most magnificent gorge in Graubünden. In some places, it is only a few meters wide, with cliffs towering up to 300 meters on either side, while a gently flowing river runs deep within. Visitors who wish to experience it firsthand can first descend 321 secure steps down to the Hinterrhein, and visit the “whirl-pools” and a historic bridge built in 1739. Of course, you can also hike along the trail from Thusis to Val Müra. In 1788, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe passed through Val Müra on his journey to Italy. Although no written account of this trip exists, he depicted his journey through sketches. The Val Müra gorge is typically open from April to October.
