Lake Toma

Lake Toma is located near the Alpine Pass, in the middle of a nature reserve at an altitude of 2,344 meters, close to the small village of Tschamut in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The lake has a surface area of 2.5 hectares. Lake Toma is officially recognized as the source of the Rhine River, and it is also the only place where this river, which flows through four countries, can still be jumped across.

It takes about 90 minutes on foot along the signposted path from the Oberalp Pass to reach Lake Toma, which lies beneath the Badus Peak. Along the road and around the lake, you’ll find a variety of wildflowers: rhododendrons, gentians, alpine roses, daisies, cotton grass, and more. Recognized as one of Switzerland’s most iconic landscapes, Lake Toma is also a nationally protected nature reserve. Its crystal-clear, drinkable waters have long attracted nature-loving hikers.
