Louwman Museum

The Louwman Museum was established in 1969 and is located in The Hague, the Netherlands, near the Dutch A44 motorway. It is an automobile museum dedicated to collecting antique cars, horse-drawn carriages, and motorcycles. The collection of over two hundred vehicles represents two generations of the Louwman family’s acquisitions, making it one of the world’s earliest publicly accessible private automobile museums.

The new building of the Louwman Museum was completed and opened to the public in The Hague on July 3, 2010. This museum was designed by American architect Michael Graves and features three floors with a total exhibition area of ten thousand square meters. The design takes into account the historical and practical context of the site. The museum’s lobby boasts a grand arched wooden ceiling that forms the east-west spine of the building, separating the expansive exhibition halls from smaller public spaces such as the bookstore. The steep, pointed roof is a hallmark of traditional Dutch architecture, and the exterior resembles a carriage house.

The façade of the Louwman Museum features bricks arranged in a unique texture, creating a striking contrast with other walls. The octagonal exhibition hall at the rear of the building hosts special exhibitions and connects to a tree-lined avenue. The Dutch landscape architecture firm Lodewijk Baljon designed the park surrounding the museum, planting large trees and hedges that frame the structure.
