Belderen Museum

The Belderen Museum is constructed between the beach and dunes of Scheveningen, The Hague, Netherlands, and is mainly built around an 1826-era pavilion. This is a uniquely styled seaside sculpture museum with human-themed statues in various sizes—some crafted from bronze, others from stone—many of which convey diverse human expressions. A set of bronze statues of the Dutch royal family is also displayed here, often attracting the admiration of many visitors.

The museum was built by the Scholten-Miltenburg couple to showcase their unique art collection to the public. The location of the building posed many logistical challenges, and to overcome the numerous design difficulties, the couple hired architect Wim Quist, whose style they described as “clear, concise, yet majestic.” Fascinated by the bright light and the almost untouched landscape, Wim Quist designed a semi-underground structure built around the existing house. The museum includes indoor spaces and terraces, both of which do not disrupt the natural environment—in fact, they enhance its beauty and serve as an unexpected backdrop for the artworks on display.
