The Old Library of The Hague is located in the Binnenhof (Parliament Palace) in The Hague, Netherlands. It is an exquisitely vintage library, constructed in the late 19th century by architect Cornelis Hendrik Peters. At the time, since there were no electric lights, to reduce the use of candles and gas lamps and ensure the safety of the collection, the ceiling of the building was designed as a massive glass dome. This allowed light to illuminate the entire four-story library through the central atrium and the intricately carved openwork floors on each level.

The Old Library of The Hague is a prime example of the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. Its exterior features Neo-Renaissance architectural style, while its interior shows influences from Chinese culture, which can be seen in the railings’ craftsmanship and decorative carvings. It is hailed as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. The spacious and bright medieval-style grand hall, along with the vermilion carved staircase that spirals upward, make this stunning and enchanting library an absolute must-see. Unfortunately, the library is generally not open to the public, but it does open to visitors on weekends between the end of August and the end of September each year — during European Heritage Days.
