Castel del Monte is situated on a mountaintop 30 kilometers west of Lecce, a solitary hilltop fortress that serves as an architectural emblem of its era and is frequently likened to Rome’s Colosseum. Constructed between 1240 and 1280 by Frederick II, historians remain divided on whether it functioned as a hunting retreat or a military fortification. However, there is consensus on one fact: in 1247, Frederick II held his daughter Violante’s wedding to Riccardo of Caserta here.

The castle’s entrance follows the slow, ceremonial rhythm of a Solomon-style procession, almost like a path leading to a sacred ritual. Yet this “altar” is somewhat peculiar: architecturally distinctive, its structure adopts a uniquely polygonal form featuring eight octagonal towers at the corners, with an octagonal central courtyard; surrounding it are eight sturdy irregularly quadrilateral rooms, their windows offering sweeping views of the spectacular mountain scenery. Among these, the octagonal towers are the highest points of the castle, and the octagonal shape has become the building’s defining feature—marked by highly regular geometry and remarkable practicality.

Inside Castel del Monte are spacious and comfortable rooms, including bathrooms equipped with spaces for oil lamps, tall fireplaces, exquisitely crafted marble ceilings, and walls adorned with decorations reminiscent of church ornaments—all hidden within the lord’s residence.
