The Trulli of Alberobello

Alberobello is a small town in the Province of Bari, Puglia region, Italy. Its trulli architecture is world-renowned and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The cone-shaped, white-walled buildings with dark stone slate roofs are the area’s distinctive local dwellings known as “trulli,” and the resulting scenery truly has a magical, timeless atmosphere. Each trullo's roof features a small stone spire topped with a marble sphere, and many of the rooftops are adorned with various inscriptions and drawings—some symbolizing Catholic iconography, others secular in nature.

Trulli originated in the 19th century and can be found throughout Puglia, but the most beautiful examples are in Alberobello, where the trulli form an entire residential district. The buildings make extensive use of readily available limestone, with only the doors and the floors beneath the conical roofs made of wood. These floors serve as storage spaces or bedrooms, and some even include underground water cisterns. Trulli architecture features small, few windows, thick stone walls, and high roofs, which locals say help keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. The walls consist of two closely stacked layers of stone filled with soil, straw, or wheat stalks in between. For insulation and protection against the cold, wall thickness can reach up to two meters. This construction method also makes it difficult to install windows, so many trulli either have no windows at all or ones so small that even a cat would have to squeeze to get through.
