Lucera Castle

Lucera Castle is located in the southern Italian city of Lucera and has a history dating back to the 13th century. It was commissioned by Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire. The castle was built in 1233 on the site of a former Roman Catholic church, and its tall walls were constructed by Charles I of Naples between 1269 and 1283 to enhance its military defensive functions and accommodate a garrison.

A major earthquake in 1456 caused severe damage to the castle’s walls and fortifications, leaving only the outer walls and parts of the bastions. It was abandoned in the 18th century and later preserved as a provincial heritage site in the 19th century. Lucera Castle offers the best vantage point to view the Puglia Plain, where visitors can enjoy an unobstructed panoramic view of the vast grasslands.
