Barletta

Barletta is a city located in the province of Bari, Apulia region, in southeastern Italy. Since 2009, it has served as the capital of the newly established province of Barletta-Andria-Trani.

Barletta is known for the Colossus of Barletta, a huge bronze sculpture of the Roman Emperor Theodosius II, standing 4 meters tall — the largest late Roman sculpture. The Barletta Cathedral, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles and is the city’s most important and popular church. Barletta Castle was built by the Normans in the 10th century and originally used as a hostel. It was expanded during the reign of Theodosius II and later served as barracks and military storage in 1915. Other sites worth visiting include the Church of San Giacomo and the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre.
