Andria

Andria is a city located in the province of Bari, Apulia region, in southeastern Italy. It is the fourth-largest city in the Apulia region, after Bari, Taranto, and Foggia. It is an important agricultural hub and service center, primarily known for its production of wine, olive oil, and cheese.

Andria was one of the favorite residences of Roman Emperor Theodosius II, for whom he had Castel del Monte built between around 1229 and 1249. It is an architecture full of the number eight—a unique octagonal building featuring eight towers, eight rooms on each floor, and so on. Each of the eight sides is 16.5 meters long, and there are eight octagonal towers, each 25 meters high, positioned at the corners. Inside the castle is an octagonal courtyard. In 1996, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of Andria is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Built in the 12th century, it underwent renovation and reconstruction in the mid-14th century, showcasing late Gothic architecture and currently presenting a Baroque style. It was restored in 1965. Other must-see landmarks include the majestic Ducal Palace, the 14th-century Church of San Domenico, and the 12th-century Church of San Francesco.
