Lecce

Lecce is an ancient historic city in the Apulia region of southern Italy, serving as the capital of the Province of Lecce. It is one of the most important cities in the Apulia region. As a major city on the Salentine Peninsula at the southeastern tip of the Italian Peninsula, Lecce has a history of more than 2,000 years. It is an important agricultural center, especially for olive oil and wine production, and is also a center for pottery manufacturing.

With many significant Baroque monuments, Lecce is known as the “Florence of the South.” The Basilica di Santa Croce is an extremely important local building, constructed in 1353, with its façade adorned with animals, fantastical figures, and vegetables. The Lecce Cathedral, originally built in 1144, is one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Italy. The Church of San Niccolò and Cataldo represents the Norman style in Italy; the Church of San Matteo, built in 1667, is a classic example of Central Italian Baroque. Other must-sees include the ancient Roman amphitheater, the towers that symbolize Lecce’s medieval past, triumphal arches, and the archaeological museum.
