Former Site of the Eighth Sub-district of Jin-Sui

The Former Site of the Eighth Sub-district of Jin-Sui is a cultural relic protection unit of Taiyuan City and a classic red tourism attraction.

The Former Site of the Eighth Sub-district of Jin-Sui is located to the west of Guantou Village, Chakou Township, Gujiao. Originally built as a village temple during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, it retains 15 rooms including the main hall and side halls, covering an area of 600 square meters. The Eighth Sub-district served as the southern gateway to the Jin-Sui Base Area and was a vital transportation route connecting the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region with various anti-Japanese bases, holding significant strategic importance. In November 1942, Luo Gui-bo was appointed as commander and political commissar of the Eighth Sub-district of Jin-Sui, as well as secretary of the Eighth District Party Committee, after which the district’s Party committee, administrative office, and sub-district headquarters were relocated to Guantou Village. During the winter of 1943 and February 1944, prominent figures such as Peng Dehuai, Liu Bocheng, and Chen Yi stayed briefly in Guantou Village. In September 1944, a delegation of Allied journalists visited and spent several days there. At the same time, the Yellow River Daily newspaper office, printing plant, and sub-district radio station were also moved to Guantou Village. As a crucial transportation hub, the Eighth Sub-district accomplished the arduous tasks of transporting wounded soldiers, grain, ammunition, and documents during the War of Resistance Against Japan, and safely escorted over 3,000 central leaders—including Liu Shaoqi, Peng Dehuai, Chen Yi, Liu Bocheng, Deng Xiaoping, Yang Shangkun, Lu Dingyi, Chen Geng, and Bo Yibo—as well as delegates to the Seventh National Congress and other cadres. It was hailed by the Party Central Committee as the “Steel Corridor.” In 1979, the Gujiao municipal government carried out repairs on the site. In 2009, Chakou Township renovated the site again, further enriching its exhibition content. In 2000, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Taiyuan Municipal People’s Government and serves as a Taiyuan patriotic education base.

Guantou Village: Located in Chakou Township, Guantou Village sits upstream of the Tunlan River, 35 kilometers from downtown Gujiao and 3 kilometers from the scenic Erlong Mountain. The village covers an area of 21.4 square kilometers, comprises 6 natural villages, and has a population of 463 households, totaling 1,514 people, including 51 Party members. The cultivated land area is 3,200 mu, and forested land covers 1,700 mu. The per capita net income of farmers in the village reaches 3,011 yuan. In 2006, it was named a provincial-level ecological civilization village. In 2007, Guantou Village was listed as a provincial key village for new rural construction.
