Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica
Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica consist of two separate components, featuring significant traces from Greek and Roman periods: the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica contains more than 5,000 rock-cut tombs near open quarries, most dating back to between the 13th and 7th centuries BC. Byzantine-era ruins are also preserved here, particularly the remnants of the Anaktoron Palace, the residence of princes.
Another part of the ancient city of Syracuse is the island of Ortygia in the city center, built in the 8th century BC by Greeks from Corinth. This site, described by Cicero as “the greatest and most beautiful city of Greece,” preserves monuments such as the Temple of Athena Nike (built in the 5th century BC and later converted into a cathedral), the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, and fortresses. Many remains bear witness to the turbulent history of Sicily from the Byzantine to the Bourbon periods, involving Arab-Muslims, Normans, Frederick II of the Hohenstaufen dynasty (1197–1250 AD), Aragon, and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The Syracuse ruins showcase the development of Mediterranean civilization over nearly 3,000 years.
