Ragusa is located in the Sicily region of southern Italy and serves as the capital of the Province of Ragusa. It was built on a broad limestone hill between two deep valleys, at an elevation of 520 meters. In 2002, Ragusa, along with seven other towns in the Valley of the Temples (Noto Valley), was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ragusa consists of two parts: the ancient lower town and the modern upper town, divided by the Valle dei Ponti (Valley of the Bridges). The lower town represents ancient history and long-standing culture, while the upper town exemplifies a modern urban area. The historic lower town boasts numerous Baroque buildings, including several palaces and churches. The Cathedral of San Giorgio, in Catalan style and named after the Protecting Saint George, was built in 1739 and designed by Gagliardi. The dome above the cathedral was not completed until 1820, featuring a distinctive neoclassical style and colorful stained glass. The Church of San Giovanni, constructed between 1718 and 1778, is a typical example of Southern Sicilian Baroque architecture.
