Syracuse

Syracuse is a coastal ancient city located on the island of Sicily in Italy. It serves as the capital of the Province of Syracuse and was founded in 734 BC by Greek colonists from Corinth. The city played a significant role in antiquity and is also the hometown of the ancient Greek scientist and philosopher Archimedes.

Syracuse is known for its diverse Greek history, culture, amphitheaters, and agriculture. With its wealth of historical ruins, Syracuse has become a prominent tourist destination. In 2005, Syracuse and the Necropolis of Pantalica were designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The ruins of Syracuse showcase the development of Mediterranean civilization over nearly 3,000 years. This site, described by Cicero as "the greatest and most beautiful city of Greece," preserves landmarks such as the Temple of Athena Nike, the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, and various fortresses.

Numerous religious buildings also reflect the city’s diverse religious history and cultural evolution. Highlights include the Syracuse Cathedral, the 18th-century Church of San Paolo, and the 14th-century Church of San Cristoforo.
