Milan Cathedral

Although its name Duomo means "dome," Milan Cathedral is actually a Gothic-style building. Dominating the city center, construction of Milan Cathedral began in 1386 and took 500 years to complete, earning it the reputation as the most magnificent Gothic structure in Italy.

The Cathedral

Hundreds of spires rise toward the sky, and the white marble façade is adorned with thousands of statues. The vast interior space is filled with a solemn religious atmosphere as sunlight filters through the beautiful stained glass windows. The crypt also preserves the remains of the original Church of Santa Tecla, which once stood on the site.

The Cathedral is not only a symbol of Milan but also its center. Climbing to the rooftop terrace offers views of three circular boulevards and the intricate web of streets that spread out between them.

Located in the bustling Piazza del Duomo in central Milan, Milan Cathedral is one of the most splendid churches in the world. It is second in size only to St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. Made of marble, it was praised by American writer Mark Twain as "a poem in marble." The cathedral is a symbol of Milan, with its façade blending Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassical styles. The bronze doors are exceptionally grand, and their carved themes are closely tied to religion and the history of Milan. The diverse statues on the façade all showcase the essence of art.

The cathedral’s roof is crowned with 135 Gothic marble spires, the tallest of which stands 108 meters high. Atop the highest spire is a 4.2-meter-tall gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, which shines brilliantly in the sunlight, creating a magnificent sight. The cathedral is laid out in the shape of a Latin cross, measuring 150 meters in length and 92 meters in width. The façade features six sets of massive columns and five large bronze doors, with the central door being the largest at 37 tons. Each door is divided into numerous panels from top to bottom, with carvings depicting the history, myths, and biblical stories of Milan Cathedral, as well as various patterns, animals, birds, and floral designs. From the rooftop, you can not only admire the beauty of the sculptures but also enjoy panoramic views of Milan in all directions, with breathtaking vistas that are truly uplifting. The large square in front of the cathedral is a venue for major political and religious events and lies at the true heart of the city, making it well worth a visit.
