Brera Gallery

The Brera Gallery is an art museum in Milan, Italy, and one of the most important collections of Italian paintings. It is housed in the Palazzo Brera along with the Brera Academy, where Raphael’s “The Marriage of the Virgin” is among the significant early acquisitions.

The entire building is divided into 40 rooms, housing a variety of famous paintings. Room 4 features many works by Tintoretto, a key figure of the Venetian school, such as “Saint Helena with the True Cross and Saints,” “The Descent from the Cross,” and “The Miracle of Saint Mark.” In Room 23, the most eye-catching piece is Raphael’s “The Marriage of the Virgin,” where the wedding takes place not in a church but in a sunlit square, presided over by the high priest, with Joseph placing the ring on Mary’s finger. Other figures are arranged symmetrically on both sides, creating a balanced composition. The lines of the square stones, the shadows of the figures, and the 16-sided baptistery in the background create a profound sense of spatial depth. The painting is rich and harmonious in color, filled with musicality, as if the ceremony is taking place to the sound of music, fully demonstrating the artist’s skill. Rooms 31, 32, and 33 house treasures by the Lombard school, renowned painters from various parts of Italy, and other notable European artists such as Rubens and Rembrandt.
