Former Residence of Cui Yisheng

The former residence of Cui Yisheng is located in the courtyard of Zhao Bingzhi at Gouzi, Shuiyu Village, Miaowan Township, Loufan County, covering a construction area of 252 square meters.

Before the Spring Festival in 1942, the Third Prefectural Committee and the Third Administrative Office of Northwest Shanxi held a county and district cadre meeting in Shuiyu Village. Cui Yisheng, head of the Organization Department of the Third Prefectural Committee, came to attend the meeting and stayed in the second eastern cave dwelling. On February 15 (the first day of the Lunar New Year), party and government cadres celebrated with the masses. On the 16th, Japanese troops stationed in Gujiao launched a surprise attack on Shuiyu Village. Surrounded by the Japanese in the Zhao family courtyard, Cui Yisheng hid in the house at the north side of the gatehouse (sheepfold). Later, in an effort to rescue his guard, he fought alone against the Japanese soldiers, was stabbed more than ten times, and was martyred near the elm tree in front of the gate. After the Shuiyu Incident, villagers buried Cui Yisheng and other revolutionary martyrs’ bodies on the temple pagoda southeast of the village. The former residence consists of four earthen eastern cave dwellings, two pillow caves (now collapsed), four double-ridged west rooms with timber and earth structure, and a gatehouse, among which the gatehouse and two west rooms have collapsed.

Cui Yisheng (1912–1942), also known as He Dafang, was from Lishi, Shanxi. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1937.

Shuiyu Village: Shuiyu Village is connected to Gujiao in the east, borders Fenhe Reservoir in the west, links to Shuangjing Village in the north, and adjoins Xiashijiazhuang Village in the south. It has a total population of 555 people, with 164 households—87 residing in the village and 498 living outside. The total land area is 2,024 mu, including 400 mu of forestland, 1,200 mu of terraced fields, and 400 mu of sloping fields. There are 14 cattle, 200 chickens, 2 donkeys, 1 small four-wheel vehicle, and 3 hand tractors.
