Nîmes Arena

The Nîmes Arena is located in the French city of Nîmes, standing tall under the blue sky and white clouds. It is an ancient Roman amphitheater and one of the main Roman monuments in Nîmes. It is also one of the most well-preserved among the few remaining arenas in the world, boasting a long history that is truly captivating.

Built during the reign of Emperor Augustus (in the year 70 AD), the Nîmes Arena is elliptical in shape, measuring 133 meters in length and 101 meters in width. It features 34 rows of seating and could accommodate 16,300 spectators for events. Since 1989, it has been equipped with a movable roof and heating system. In 1863, the arena was converted into a bullring, where two bullfights are held each year. Additionally, it is used for other public events. Whenever a bullfight begins, the entire arena comes alive with excitement, as the honor earned by gladiators with their lives ignites the passion of everyone present, prompting wild cheers. When you stand quietly in the stands, you can see the traces of over two thousand years of history etched into the stone steps, with parts of the walls collapsed yet the remaining ruins still standing solemnly. Yet its beautiful elliptical form continues to hold endless allure.

When there are no events or activities taking place, the Nîmes Arena resembles an elder who has witnessed over 2,000 years of history, silently sitting there and quietly reflecting on the dramatic changes, upheavals, and historical transformations of the past two millennia.
