Alès

Alès is a commune in the Gard department in the Occitanie region of southern France, and also the subprefecture of the department. It is located about 40 km northwest of Nîmes, on the left bank of the Gardon River. This is an important mining center, home to the renowned École des Mines d'Alès, and also a significant raw silk market in southern France.

The wide streets and numerous buildings shaded by rows of trees make Alès very charming. Among them, the 18th-century Cathedral of Alès stands out the most; it is a Roman Catholic church and also a historical monument in France. The ancient fortress once served as a prison and military barracks; the municipal park, which boasts a wide variety of plant species, opened to the public in 1981.

The Museum of Mining History (Mine Témoin), the modern art museum also known as the Pierre André Benoit Library-Museum (Musée bibliothèque Pierre André Benoit), the Mining History Museum, and the museum with rich archaeological and artistic collections are all must-visits.
