Stanislas Leszczynski, a king without a kingdom who later became Duke of Lorraine, made Nancy his temporary residence, turning it into one of the oldest and most typical examples of a modern capital. It turns out that the monarch, influenced by Enlightenment ideals, was indeed sensitive to public needs. Between 1752 and 1756, a talented team led by architect Héré built up the city. It was a carefully designed project that successfully created a capital both enhancing the prestige of the kingdom and practical in use.

The urban center of Nancy is confined within three adjacent city squares, situated at the boundary between the new and old towns. Two squares aligned in a straight line create a 500-meter-wide vista, forming a harmonious and rational whole. The triumphal arch defines the passage and connects the two squares, known as Place de la Carrière (Carrière Square) and Place Royale (Royal Square), the latter being the main central design. Nearby, Nancy's third square, called Place de l'Union (Union Square), also includes several gateways, evidencing the presence of ancient fortifications.
