Château d'Oiron

Château d'Oiron is located in the Oiron region of the Poitou-Charentes area in western France. It gained worldwide recognition as the main setting of the fairy tale "Puss in Boots" written by Charles Perrault.

The construction of Château d'Oiron began during the Hundred Years' War in the 15th century when the French King Charles VII granted this estate and the surrounding vast forests to Guillaume Gouffier, the governor of Touraine. In the 18th century, Madame de Montespan, the mistress of Louis XIV, also resided here and had a beautiful royal garden built. During the French Revolution in 1793, the château was looted. Afterwards, it remained abandoned for many years until the eve of World War II, when the French government took over the site and eventually transformed its interior into a museum.

Since 1923, Château d'Oiron has been listed as a historical monument by the French Ministry of Culture. Today, the château is nestled deep within a lush cedar forest and boasts a magnificent Renaissance architectural style. Starting in 1933, the château museum has been dedicated to collecting and exhibiting both ancient and modern artworks. The original owners, the Gouffier family, amassed a collection of portraits of the Muses, and there is also a gallery depicting the Trojan War and the Roman epic, the Aeneid. In the 1980s, a group of artists were invited to restore and enhance the existing artworks.
