Saintes

Saintes is a city located in the Charente-Maritime department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in France. It serves as the sub-prefecture of Charente-Maritime and is the second-largest city in the department. Situated on the left bank of the Charente River, Saintes has been an urban center since Roman times and is now an important transportation hub as well as a major commercial and economic center in the Charente-Maritime region.

Thanks to its renowned Gallo-Roman, medieval, and neoclassical cultural heritage, Saintes is a popular tourist destination. The Archaeological Museum houses a 1st-century Roman chariot along with numerous sculptures and inscriptions. Several other museums display 19th- and 20th-century porcelain and paintings from the Sèvres region, as well as local ceramics and paintings from the 15th to 18th centuries, in addition to Mannerist architecture—making them ideal for exploring the area’s history, art, and craftsmanship. Must-see attractions also include the ancient Roman public baths, ancient temples, Roman aqueducts, the Roman arena, the Arch of Germanicus, and the Saintes Cathedral.
