Rochefort City

Rochefort is a city in France, serving as a port on the Charente River. Located in the Charente-Maritime department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France, it is a model of a 17th-century new town. Once the natural border between France and Britain, it has transformed over the years into a tourist city.

The Rochefort-Martrou Transporter Bridge is Rochefort’s most famous vertical-lift steel truss bridge. Construction began in 1898, and it was completed in 1900. Spanning the Charente River, it is 175.5 meters long and 66.5 meters high. The bridge ceased operation in 1967 and is now a historical monument. The Rochefort Naval Museum, part of the National Navy Museum, is an important destination for learning about the history and development of the French navy. The Conservatoire du Bégonia is a botanical garden focused on begonias, established in 1988, featuring over 500 species. Also not to be missed are the zoo (La Palmyre Zoo) with its diverse range of animals, the replica frigate, and the beautiful surrounding countryside.
