Cognac

Cognac is a commune in the Charente department in southwestern France’s Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It serves as the sub-prefecture of the Charente department, situated on the banks of the Charente River between Angoulême and Saintes, approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Paris. It is also one of the stops along the UNESCO-listed Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route. The town is globally famous for its Cognac brandy and is also the most historically charming town in the Charente department.

The old town, stretching from the Saint-Jacques Tower along the river to the Church of Saint-Léger, boasts numerous remarkable buildings constructed between the 15th and 18th centuries, featuring elaborately decorated facades. Many of them are adorned with the salamander emblem representing François I. The Musée des Arts du Cognac (Cognac Art Museum) and the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire (Museum of Art and History) are ideal places to explore the area’s history, geology, art, and social life. Not to be missed are the Château de Valois, a significant medieval trading post; the Church of Saint-Léger; the beautiful Cognac Public Garden; several ancient Roman churches; and various castles.
