Malraux Museum

The Malraux Museum is situated in Le Havre, in the Upper Normandy region of France. It was established in 1961 and is named after André Malraux, the then French Minister of Culture and a famous writer. It is one of the most comprehensive museums in France for collecting Impressionist paintings. The museum building was designed and constructed by a well-known French architecture studio, featuring a structure that ingeniously combines glass and steel. A distinctive feature of the building is its large glass-framed doors and windows facing the sea.

The Malraux Museum is one of the finest art galleries in Normandy, housing artworks from the past five centuries and featuring masterpieces by numerous renowned artists, including Monet and other painters who lived or worked in Normandy. These include works by Eugène Delacroix, Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Georges Seurat. One of the museum’s most recent acquisitions is Gustave Courbet’s “Vague, par temps d'orage.” In 1874, Monet’s painting “Impression, Sunrise,” set in Le Havre, was exhibited in Paris, from which the term “Impressionism” originated.

In 2004, a voluntary donation by Hélène Senn-Foulds of the paintings collected by her grandfather, Olivier Senn, became one of the most important sources of the Malraux Museum’s collection. This donation comprised a total of 205 pieces, covering major works of Impressionism and Fauvism, including 71 oil paintings, 129 drawings and graphic designs, as well as 5 sculptures.
